New novice leagues on Saturdays and Thursdays
One of our success stories last season was the development of a novice league on Sunday afternoons that used all six sheets in the final five-week session. Our novice league offerings are expanding this coming season with five-week leagues on Saturdays at 11:30 am and a 15-week league on Thursday evenings that begins Nov. 7. Brooms and Beers presents new award in memory of Gary Sutcliffe
Kelly Reaburn (right) receiving the first Gary Sutcliffe Good Sport Award from SMBB league rep Bill Flynn
The Saturday Morning Brooms and Beers League has added a new plaque to its annual awards in honour of Gary Sutcliffe, "The Gary Sutcliffe Good Sport Award." Gary was a long-serving Marpole CC volunteer who died during this past curling season.
Gary was a longtime leader for the Saturday morning time slot, first with the CN League at 10:30 am, which was merged with the 8:30 am Morning After League. The merger was needed as both leagues had declining membership and reducing costs for the club was the main driver. The new 9:30 am merged league is known as the present day SMBB.
At that time, the combination of both leagues could barely fill eight teams with several three-person teams. This time slot also had two teams of Special Olympians playing each other every week. Gary came up with the idea of asking the Special Olympians to join the SMBB, with each of them playing lead on a team in the league. This integration was very successful for many years, not to mention a lot fun. However, time and life circumstances brought this integration to an end this past season.
Kelly Reaburn is the last of many Special Olympians who played with SMBB, and he will be moving away. In recognition of Gary Sutcliffe's contributions to Saturday league curling, the Good Sport Award has been added to SMBB awards. In honour of the Special Olympians' contribution to SMBB and in recognition of Kelly, he was first curler presented with this new award. Also worth noting is that Kelly played in the Marpole Club Championship last season on the representative team from SMBB.
