Senior Ladies’ Spiel a big success

Laura Rampton recaps this past weekend’s Sr. Ladies’ Bonspiel at the MCC…

Twelve senior ladies teams got an early start to the season by playing in the Marpole Simply Seniors’ Ladies Bonspiel September 21 and 22. Feedback from everyone was that the ice was great, the brunch delicious, the goodies appreciated, and that the morning scones keep them coming back! A great way to start the season seeing old friends, catching up from the summer and seeing if those hips/knees and backs will slide us into another season – if not there is always the stick to keep us on the ice!

Everyone went home with some loonies and toonies! The overall winners this year were:

1st Place – Kathy Smiley, Terri Miller, Teri Palynchuk, Linda Torgenson

2nd Place – Heather Kerr, Cathy McLeod, Lu Petterson, Sherry Barker

3rd Place – Laura Rampton, Joy McInnis, Judy Frampton, Marian Dickens (with help from Anne Fraser & Claudia Campbell)

4th Place – Sharon Inglis, Connie Bailey, Sharon Carefoot, Louise Horton, Debby Vollbrecht

Thank you to Robbie, our manager, and the Marpole Staff (Owen, Norm, Carolyn, Lana, Brian and Ken) for their work in making great ice, great food and a great welcome for our curlers. Thank you to the bonspiel committee and helpers for again doing a great job (Marian Dickens & Connie Bailey (Scoring), Penny Anderson, Janice Robinson & Anna Burroughs (50/50), Sylvia Dixon & Enid Dixon, Sheila McWilliams (Brunch), Joy McInnis & Judy Frampton (Coffee & Muffins), Judy Frampton (Pictures), Kay Morris & Marian Dickens(Tea), Pat Leadbetter, Pearl Lowe, Barb Trip (Soup & Sandwiches). Thank you also to the ladies who baked squares and muffins.

See you all again. Same time next year!

Cameron rink wins Opening SkinSpiel

It’s been a busy couple weeks here at the Marpole Curling Club with lessons, bonspiels, leagues and an open house.

We had 12 new groups join us for curling lessons and are happy to welcome some of them to leagues as a result. We also had a very successful open house on Thursday, Sept 13. All six of our sheets will busy with activity over the four hours, and three featured games also took place from 6-8pm. Between 150-200 attended the event which was the largest turnout in recent memory. Congratulations to Aaron Gallant who won the draw to receive free league fees for the year.

Tammy Cameron had the hot hand at the Opening SkinSpiel on Saturday. With a draw to the four-foot, Cameron and her crew picked up a $54 skin and top prize for the day totalling $114. Keith Parry’s rink came in at a close second place with $111 and Team Tough Shots finished in third with $108. Thanks to Teams Braun, Adams and Shimizu for rounding out the one day event.
